Car Painting

Car Painting

Updated March, 2023

I always love finding new activities for toddlers and young children. This can include fun painting activities for toddlers or other art projects for kids. I try to keep it to simple art projects for kids so that everyone can focus on having fun. In this easy art project for young children all you need is some paper, paint, and a few cars. So get some supplies ready for this art project that you can easily do at home with your children.

Supplies

Hopefully for this activity you will already have everything you need in your house. There are only  handful of items you will need. It is important to always remember that there is no right or wrong way to do art. Supply your child with everything they need, then sit back and let them create in whatever way brings them joy.

We’ve all done finger painting, and painting with a paintbrush is very common. So what are some ways we can offer our children some variety? One of our favorite activities is car painting. It is exactly as easy as it sounds. Your child drives their cars (we also used trains and helicopters) through some paint and then across their paper. Simple, easy, a little extra clean up, and a lot of fun. If you can get cars with different types of wheels as well, even better. Looking at the tracks the different cars make is extra fun.

I like to use standard tempura paint for this project. I always love messes that are easily washable, and this type of paint invites an easy clean up.

To help make this project easier, you are going to want a paper plate. Or again, if you don’t mind a little extra clean up, a regular plate will do just fine. Something with flat surface area though.

I typically buy white paper by the tree. Might as well, so I don’t have to worry about running out of it.

Cars, the most important element of this project! You can use any cars you might have. If your child is very young, keep the cars larger so they are easy to grip. As they get older, smaller cars will work as well.

Process

Step 1: Gather Supplies

Gather Supplies

  • Paint (washable suggested)
  • A paper plate
  • Cars, trucks, and other toy vehicles
  • Paper

Step 2: Set Up

Set out all of your supplies in an easy way for your child. Make a few puddles of paint on the paper plate so that your child can drive the vehicles through the puddles easily.

Step 3: Paint!

Now sit back and let your child paint! It’s that easy.

Optional Expansion Ideas

  • Lay out a long piece of paper on the ground and have them drive the cars extra far.
  • Build a “town” and drive the cars on the roads, making a path with multiple vehicles.
  • Drive different vehicles before your child sees and have them match the vehicle to the correct tracks.

Results

The final result of this painting is so pretty! If you trade out papers before they get too over run with paint, you even preserve the paint color. The below example is of trains, cars, and some helicopter lines as well. Make sure to date the art and help your child hang it on the wall.
