12 Board Books for Your Toddler

12 Board Books for Your Toddler

Updated October, 2022

Yes, I love books, and specifically, board books are extra fun for me. While I have made a lot of different  lists of favorite books, this is highlighting the best toddler board books, but narrowed down to just 12! I cannot tell you how hard it was for me to narrow it down. These books are my best board books for 1 year olds, but they are are great board books for babies and toddlers in general as well. Remember it is always important to read to children, no matter their age.

I happened to stumble upon A is for Activist a few years ago and I have simply fallen in love with it. An alphabet adventure with a social justice lens. This is one of my favorites, and one of the few I could read again and again.
I really love Sandra Boynton and almost everything she writes. The Belly Button Book is super cute. Follow the hippos as they hello to their belly buttons in a hippo way.
A light, lilting rhyme, I like Boo! because it flows easily but is short. It has a touch and feel affect so there is something to interact with on every page.
Can all the coconuts fit in the coconut tree? Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is an adorable alphabet book. It has an excellent flow and is one that I have actually turned into a song.
Dr. Seuss is fun, and we all know this. But many of the books by Dr. Seuss are too long for most toddlers. The board book version of The Foot Book gives you the fun of Dr. Seuss without the required attention span.

Little Hare loves Big Hare, a LOT. Guess How Much I Love You is an adorable book that follows infinite amounts of love.
The friendly Little Blue Truck drives around and makes time to say hello to all the animals it passes. When a rude dump truck pushes past and then gets stuck, can Little Blue Truck help out?
This is my actual favorite book by Sandra Boynton. I could read Moo, Baa, La La La everyday for very close to forever (no, please do not call me on this). It;s fun, simple, and cute. Deep? No. Adorable? Yes!
Okay, I may have to change this list in a few months because I realize Snuggle Puppy is yet another Sandra Boynton book, which means she is on this list a sinful 3 times. But this song book is fun and full of love.
I chose That’s Not My Owl specifically because it’s cover is blue. That is the entire reason I chose it if we are honest. I actually love all of the That’s Not My… books. They are fun, perfect for toddlers, and great for exploring.

There’s a Monster in Your Book is possibly my actual #1 favorite book. It’s also the favorite book of both of my children. They still read it regularly even at 3 and 5. It’s the book I read to my college students to introduce reading books to children. It’s the book I tell people about the most. This author has a whole series and I have them all, but this was the first and arguably the best.
I really like combining music with reading. I think it’s engaging for toddlers. You Are My Sunshine does exactly that in an easy, accessible way.
