Creating a Vision Board

Creating a Vision Board

I enjoy writing down my goals and having them printed in front of me. This isn’t the only way to manifest your dreams though. One of my favorite activities is to create a vision board.

A vision board is a visual representation of your goals. It can offer abstract intentions or very concrete goals. I create a vision board once per year, generally in January. Once your vision board is complete, you hang it somewhere that you will see it every day. The concept is that if you see it often, even if you aren’t consciously working towards those goals, you will hold them in your mind.

A vision board can be as complex or as simple as you want. It can also be as big or small as you feel you need. My family each does a small board, maybe one square foot or so. We hang them in our stairway to our basement. I’ve also had clients who get very large poster boards and hang them in their office or living room. You can make them individual or you can do one as a group. It’s open, flexible, and up to you.

How to Make a Vision Board

Supplies:

  • Magazines
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Canvas

The first thing is to set up your work space. Either on the floor or a table, somewhere you have plenty of room to spread out and get creative.

We tend to meditate for 10 – 15 minutes before getting started. This helps clear and open our minds so that we have the space to really feel and invite what it is we truly want. If meditation is not your thing, that’s ok. You can skip this step.

Now I’m not artistically creative, so I use magazines. Other people are incredibly gifted and will use markers or paints or some other medium to present their visual dreams. Whichever one you choose, start letting the ideas flow from your mind and onto paper.

At the end, you will have a visual board that represents your dreams and goals. There have been times when I can point to each picture and tell you what it represents, and there are times when I’m not yet sure what the image meant but it felt important to have it. Whatever you end up with, make sure you look at it daily.
