Best Educational Toys for 4-5 Year Olds

Updated March, 2022

We are old pros now at 4 years old! Your child’s play is getting deeper, more involved, and more complex. Their attention spans are lasting longer and it is time to step up their games yet again. This is my list of educational toys for 4-5 year olds.

Just like my other toy posts, my focus is on developmental appropriateness in broad strokes. You are always have the ability to look at older and younger age ranges for more ideas. These early years are rife with developmental fluidity so it’s important to look for what is right for your child.

To help deepen their play, it’s time to give your child lots of fun costumes. From animals like lions and sheep, to superheroes and fairies, this will let their imaginations grow. Be warned, I have met many children who get stuck as one costume for weeks.

One of the best ways for your child to get around is with their own set of wheels. A scooter is a fast, fun, and relatively easy mode of transportation, especially if you haven’t mastered bike riding just yet.

Dig, build, move, and explore. A good handful of construction vehicles can go a long way to helping a child feel like they are really working.

This goes along with the general vehicles, but I specify it because I absolutely love Tonka Trucks. They are so much fun to push around and use.

This is a summer thing for sure, but water balloons are so much fun. Those and water guns. Around four you should be able to trust that your child isn’t going to swallow a balloon, but do provide supervision just in case.

Starting to teach your child about money is a lot of fun. It’s a great way to build on counting and budding math skills as well.

If you grew up in the 90’s, you have to remember lite brite! I think it is still a blast and just as valuable as when I was a kid. Building the designs and then lighting them up is so much fun.

A doll house gives your child the opportunity to stage and set up their own little home. With some furniture and little dolls, they can act out little stories over and over again.
