Bringing home a new baby to a house with a cat in it already can feel stressful. What sort of behavior can you expect from your cat after having a baby? I don’t know the answer to this, as every cat is different. However, I wanted to share my experience with you as a hopeful guide.
This is Dulce.
Dulce and I have been together since I graduated college. I did not get her as a kitten, but we still have bonded closely. Even with years of roommates and my partner, Dulce has always been my cat.
Dulce has always done well as an only child and prefers it that way. Sure, she has tolerated our many foster pets, but she would rather they not exist.
I’m pretty sure Dulce knew I was pregnant before I did. For my entire pregnancy, she would not leave my side. She loved laying on my stomach. We would joke and say that Monster was just as much her baby as mine.
After Monster’s birth, Dulce was a little more skeptical. That little life inside me was making a lot of noise and demanding a lot of my attention.
It took some time, but eventually Dulce warmed up to Monster. She would even bring Monster ‘food’ if she thought I wasn’t doing well enough.
Introducing Rainbow Sprinkle into the equation drastically changed things for Dulce. She was already used to babies, so while she was less excited about my pregnancy, it took her less time to warm up to Sprinke.
I know Dulce will always prefer me over everyone else. But I am incredibly impressed with how much she has grown to like the kids too. She lets them snuggled and love her. I think she really likes when the kids find her treats as well. She loves them in her own way. And I love that they have a pet to grow up with.
